Here, in a nutshell, is the essence of this book: Virtually ALL other beginning banjo books on the market today first teach you several complicated rolls or fingerpicking patterns and then ask you to memorize their note-for-note arrangements of tunes. With this approach, it's difficult for the struggling beginner to distinguish the melody from the other notes, and what's worse, it's next to impossible to improvise, or make up your own arrangments to songs. For most beginners, this system does NOT work.

Bluegrass Banjo for the Complete Ignoramus! is different! Instead of starting with complicated rolls or fingerpicking patters, "The Ignoramus" first teaches simple MELODIES. For each of the 23 easy tunes, only the melody is tabbed out. No rolls. The student then learns how he or she can easily play all 23 tunes using only the simplest roll ("the pinch"). They gradually learn to play the melody using any or all of seven rolls. After teaching banjo for over forty years, Wayne Erbsen promises that his melody approach to teaching bluegrass banjo works. In fact, he guarantees it! Be sure to read the comments below from happy folks who have bought his book.

You WILL learn to play:  Bile ‘Em Cabbage Down, Blue Ridge Mountain Blues, Columbus Stockade Blues, Down the Road, Groundhog, Little Maggie, Long Journey Home, Lynchburg Town, Man of Constant Sorrow, My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains, Nine Pound Hammer, Palms of Victory, Pass Me Not, Poor Ellen Smith, Pretty Polly, Put My Little Shoes Away, Red River Valley, Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms, Shall We Gather at the River, Wabash Cannonball, When I Lay My Burden Down, When the Saints Go Marching In.

"Your method of teaching in the Ignoramus book is nothing short of amazing. My friend told me it took him years to brake himself from the chains of tab and do what I'm doing after a few short months. I can't thank you enough." D. Braught

"Just received your instructional book yesterday and I am playing Bile Them Cabbage Down already. Wish I would have known of a book like this in the 70's when I had my first banjo. Breaking the music down into sections was all I needed to grasp how to play. I cannot wait to learn slides and other methods." Thank-you! Gloria K.

"Your book is the first to help me see how the melody and the rolls work together, and how I can put my own little arrangements together early on. Thank you! You’re right – I do believe you could teach a frog to play the banjo – because you’re teaching me!"  John English

"I just started playing the banjo and got your "Bluegrass Banjo for the Complete Ignoramus" book, and I'm totally lovin' it! I'm one of those people who seem to have zero musical talent, but somehow I'm here pickin' to your book, and it actually sounds like what the cd says it should sound like. I'm playing everyday now and never thought it'd be that much fun... Thanks for writing that book!" Denis Senter, Nurenburg, Germany

"I have been a heavy metal guitar player for some years and by chance bought your Ignoramus banjo book. I can't believe how clearly you have explained the way forward, and now I can play the tunes in your book as much as I play the guitar. I really appreciate your book. Kind regards," Adrian Clayton, Wollongong, Australia

"If it were not for your Bluegrass Banjo for Ignoramus book, I likely would have given up on learning to play the banjo. I have purchased and used many banjo training books but have found your method of teaching far superior to anything else." S. Blake

"It seemed that I could not get it together.  I had other instruction books and could do slides, rolls, pull offs, and hammers but it seemed I was in a rut.  Nothing was together. When I bought your book 'Blue Grass Banjo for the Complete Ignoramus', I started to get out of the rut. I believe I am beginning to play the banjo now." Frank Miller

"Hey Wayne! Your bluegrass banjo for the complete ignoramus got me started 2 1/2 years ago - I haven't stopped pickin' since. i liked it and feel it has helped me progress because of the way it was written- the melody tabbed out and you writing about how to dress it up- good idea-it seems like so many other books focus more on licks than the melody. Anyways, great book!" - James

"The instruction book I bought at the store was bone dry and confusing, so I checked around found your book "Bluegrass Banjo for the Complete Ignoramus"  BOY AM I GLAD I DID! I love your funny and reassuring writing.  Although I've only been playing for a couple of months, I know a good handful of songs!  Not only that, but I now know that if I have the melody notes, I can play a pretty decent song!" D. Williams

"I am a 17 year old boy who lives in Sevier County, TN who has always wanted to learn to pick a banjo. I recently bought your book "Bluegrass Banjo for the Complete Ignoramus," and loved it. Over about three weeks, I had mastered all the rolls and I'm now just working on getting more of the songs memorized. Your book really helped me and I really appreciate it. Thanks." Andy Whisler

"I am a 75 yr old beginning banjo student who just purchased Bluegrass Banjo for the Complete Ignoramus. It is a very interesting book. Please add my name to your mailing list." B. Savage

"I've learned more than I ever thought I would from your 'Banjo for Ignoramus' book" S. Holley

"Dear Wayne, I am a 41 year old mother of 2.  We keep up a small homestead in VT.  A couple of months ago I bought your book.  I read it through as much as a person can who does not have a banjo yet. Then I could not wait another minute and I bit the bullet and bought a pretty good banjo.  This was my first musical instrument, ever!   I was skeptical that I could learn to play, but you seemed to look like an honest guy who stood behind his conviction to teach even the complete ignoramous.  Well, I can play Bile 'Em Cabbage Down with rolls!  No chords yet, but I know what a chord is, which is more than I knew a short time ago!  My husband said, "Hun, you are a good banjo player" and my 7 year old mistook my playing for your CD.  Pretty cool, huh? Thank you so much!  I can't believe I have waited so long to take up the banjo.  I fell in love with it when I was about 6.  I'm glad your book was the first I tried to learn by, I think it made a big difference.  You really do make it seem possible. Thank you once again." Sandra C. Guilford, VT
